RF Engineer


Position Overview:
The RF Engineer is responsible for the analysis, design, implementation, optimization and enhancement of wireless telecommunications networks. These include existing and planned wireless voice and data networks. Responsibilities include link budgets analysis, system dimensioning for coverage and capacity including traffic analysis, site equipment determination, initial system design and dimensioning, coverage planning, site identification, evaluation and zoning support, frequency planning and interference analysis.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform the following RF network design, planning and optimization activities as required:
  • Fully proficient in set-up, calibration, utilization, and data post processing of various drive-test hardware and software products
  • Perform site candidate evaluation and RF System Design.
  • Verify RF related site engineering drawings.
  • Perform site build verification and acceptance
  • Good knowledge of MapInfo software for search area map generation, drive-test data post processing, preparation of design and/or performance review maps and materials, etc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of at least two of the common industry propagation tools (Planet, Tornado, Wizard, Odyssey, dBPlanner, etc.) for model calibration, drive test data post-processing, map generation, frequency planning and interference matrix analysis, site database maintenance, etc.
  • Understanding of various access and modulation schemes.
  • Perform frequency and BCC planning and/or PN planning.
  • Good knowledge of system topology and air interface parameters of at least one of the main technologies (GSM/GPRS, CDMA, TDMA, iDEN, etc.).
  • Good knowledge of at least one of the main equipment vendors (Nokia, Ericsson, Nortel, Lucent, Motorola, etc.).
  • Perform site and system optimization.
  • Good understanding of antenna theory
  • Perform link budget, design criteria and traffic analysis.
  • Generate RF engineering related reports in Excel, Access, SQL as required.


Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Communications/Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent degree with 2-3 years experience or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Communications/ Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent degree with 1 year of experience.
